Self-Lubricating DU Bushing

XiaYi Self-Lubricating DU Bushing is a composite sliding bearing developed for suspension systems and mechanical components that require continuous reciprocating movement with limited lubrication access. Its three-layer construction combines a steel backing, sintered bronze layer and self-lubricating polymer surface to provide stable sliding performance without relying on frequent grease application.

Rather than focusing only on load capacity or wear resistance, XiaYi designs the Self-Lubricating DU Bushing around friction stability during repeated movement. Controlled coating thickness, accurate fitting dimensions and smooth surface finishing work together to reduce friction variation, vibration and maintenance requirements. The product is suitable for passenger cars, SUVs, EVs and commercial vehicles, particularly where suspension components operate frequently and are difficult to lubricate after assembly.

Self-Lubricating Structure

Three-Layer Design

The Self-Lubricating DU Bushing uses a steel backing layer to provide structural support, a sintered bronze intermediate layer to connect the substrate with the sliding surface, and a polymer-based lining to provide low-friction contact. This construction allows the mechanical load and sliding functions to be handled by different layers.

The polymer surface gradually forms a stable transfer film during operation, reducing direct metal-to-metal contact between the bushing and mating shaft. This makes the bushing particularly suitable for suspension components where repeated movement can quickly consume conventional lubricants.

Lubrication Without Grease

The self-lubricating layer is designed to operate with little or no additional lubrication under suitable working conditions. This reduces the need for periodic grease application and prevents lubricant from becoming a major maintenance consideration inside enclosed suspension assemblies.

For vehicle manufacturers and fleet operators, this can simplify maintenance procedures and reduce the number of lubrication-related service operations over the component's working life.

Friction Performance

Stable Sliding

A low friction coefficient alone does not guarantee stable operation. Large fluctuations during starting, stopping or reversing movement can create vibration and noise even when the average friction value is low.

XiaYi controls the polymer layer, surface finish and dimensional fit together to maintain more consistent sliding behavior. The PTFE-based surface option can achieve a friction coefficient of approximately 0.05--0.08, while DU polymer configurations typically provide approximately 0.08--0.12 under specified test conditions.

Start-Stop Movement

Shock absorbers and suspension components frequently experience short-stroke movement rather than continuous rotation. During these small repeated movements, conventional lubricated bushings may experience lubricant displacement and increased friction.

The self-lubricating surface of the DU structure maintains direct sliding contact with reduced dependence on external grease, making it suitable for frequent start-stop and low-amplitude reciprocating movement.

Noise Reduction

Friction instability can generate squeaking, rubbing or vibration during suspension movement. The smooth polymer surface and controlled fitting clearance help reduce sudden friction changes between the bushing and shaft.

This characteristic is particularly useful in passenger vehicles and EVs, where suspension noise can be noticeable inside the cabin.

Maintenance Benefits

Less Lubrication

The main maintenance advantage comes from the integrated sliding layer. Unlike conventional metal bushings that may require periodic grease replenishment, the DU structure provides its own low-friction sliding surface.

This makes it suitable for enclosed or difficult-to-access suspension positions where regular lubrication is inconvenient.

Lower Service Work

Reducing lubrication requirements can simplify routine maintenance for vehicle fleets and machinery operators. It also reduces the possibility of insufficient lubrication causing increased friction, surface damage and premature bushing replacement.

For high-mileage commercial vehicles, this maintenance characteristic can be particularly valuable because suspension components are exposed to repeated movement throughout daily operation.

Fit And Installation

Clearance Control

The relationship between the bushing and mating shaft directly affects friction, noise and service stability. Excessive clearance may allow shaft movement and vibration, while insufficient clearance can increase friction and create sticking during suspension movement.

XiaYi controls inner diameter tolerance to approximately ±0.01 mm and coaxiality to ≤0.02 mm, with a recommended assembly clearance of approximately 5--10 μm for suitable applications.

Surface Finish

The mating surface must also be sufficiently smooth to prevent accelerated wear of the polymer lining. XiaYi uses precision finishing to achieve surface roughness of approximately Ra≤0.2 μm, helping reduce local friction concentration and shaft scratching.

The final fit should always be confirmed according to the shaft material, load, operating temperature, movement speed and application design.

Application Areas

Automotive Suspension

The Self-Lubricating DU Bushing is used in shock absorber and suspension assemblies for passenger cars, SUVs and commercial vehicles. Its self-lubricating structure supports repeated suspension movement while reducing the need for regular grease maintenance.

EV Suspension

Electric vehicles can place additional demands on suspension components because of increased vehicle mass and frequent start-stop operation. The low-friction DU structure helps maintain smooth movement and reduce friction-related noise in selected EV suspension applications.

Commercial Vehicles

For light commercial vehicles operating over high annual mileage, reducing routine suspension maintenance can improve fleet service efficiency. The bushing can be used in suitable shock absorber and suspension support positions where self-lubricating operation is required.

Engineering Case

New Energy Light Truck

In 2025, a domestic new energy commercial vehicle enterprise replaced all traditional single bronze sliding bushings with XiaYi graded wear-resistant sliding bushings for its new energy light truck shock absorber assembly. The original parts had prominent problems: obvious friction noise during frequent start-stop, serious wear after 40,000 kilometers of driving, and occasional performance attenuation and failure under high-temperature summer working conditions, leading to high after-sales maintenance pressure.

After adopting the targeted XiaYi bushing matching scheme, DU polymer was used for conventional working conditions while PTFE composite was selected for high-temperature areas. The low-friction composite material reduced the friction coefficient by more than 50%, eliminating the abnormal noise during vehicle start-stop and bumpy driving. After 100,000 kilometers of road testing, no obvious wear failure occurred, while the self-lubricating structure reduced the customer's after-sales maintenance frequency by approximately 85%.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does It Need Grease?

Under suitable operating conditions, the DU structure does not require regular grease lubrication because the polymer sliding layer provides self-lubricating performance. However, the final lubrication requirement should be determined according to load, speed, temperature and shaft conditions.

How Long Can It Last?

The DU polymer version can achieve up to 1.2 million wear cycles under specified test conditions. Actual service life depends on operating load, sliding speed, temperature, shaft surface condition and installation clearance.

Can The Size Be Customized?

Yes. XiaYi supports customized inner diameter, outer diameter, wall thickness, length and other dimensions according to customer drawings or samples. The polymer formulation and structural configuration can also be selected according to the required friction, temperature and operating conditions.

Service Cost Considerations

Reduced Lubrication Work

The self-lubricating structure reduces dependence on regular grease application during suitable operating conditions. For suspension systems with limited access, this can simplify routine servicing and reduce lubrication-related maintenance work.

Fewer Maintenance Interruptions

Stable low-friction performance helps reduce premature wear caused by insufficient lubrication and excessive friction. For commercial vehicles and equipment operating frequently, fewer bushing-related service interventions can help maintain normal operating schedules.

Lower Long-Term Cost

The value of a self-lubricating DU bushing is not limited to its purchase price. Reduced lubrication requirements, longer wear intervals and lower replacement frequency can contribute to lower maintenance costs over the component's operating period. For fleet and OEM applications, XiaYi can also evaluate the bushing specification according to expected mileage, operating cycles and maintenance intervals.
